Use Pinyin to type Chinese characters in Mac OS X Yosemite

The following article will help you install the Pinyin keyboard on your Mac.

It can also help you use the Pinyin keyboard to enter Chinese characters.

This is an input method for entering Chinese characters.

[Note that you must decide whether you want to type in Traditional Chinese characters or Simplified Chinese characters. If you prefer, you can install two keyboards.]

1. Go to System Preferences. It is located on the menu bar and contains your application.

2. Select "Language and Region".

3. Go to "Preferred Language" on the left side of the page. Click the "+" button under your preferred language.

4. A list will appear. Find and select "Chinese, Simplified" or Chinese, Traditional Input Method. Click Add.

5. Your preferred method will appear in the list of preferred languages.

6. Select "Keyboard Preferences" at the bottom.

7. Under the input source, you will see a checkbox that is always at the bottom. It shows "Show input menu in menu bar".

8. Check this box to make the input method visible in the menu bar.

9. You can switch between different input methods using the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, from English to Pinyin.

10. You can also choose to make keyboard shortcuts. Select the "Shortcuts" tab ["Language Preferences"] in the same window.

11. Select the input source and check the box to select the previous input source.

12. Go to the right, go to the end of the line, and click the shortcut to highlight it.

13. When highlighted, press and hold the keyboard's Command button, then press Space Bar.

14. Your shortcut now is "Command" + Space. [If you prefer other appropriate or more familiar shortcuts, you can change this shortcut at any time.]

15. Pressing Commands and Spacebar will allow you to switch between input methods. When you press Command and Spacebar, you'll notice options such as English American or British English and Pinyin Simplified or Pinyin Tradition. Just use the space bar to jump to the desired input method.

16. Select this input method as you type, type the pinyin word, press the space bar, and the character will appear. Select the correct character and continue with the next word.

Note that you still need to choose the correct character for the Pinyin input. To recognize accurate and correct characters, you must have a good understanding of Chinese characters.
