Shaolin Kung Fu animal style

In the martial arts world, there are very few styles that capture the imagination like animal style. Although these systems are well known and often used in martial arts, they are often misunderstood and misrepresented. In this article, I hope to have an understanding of the animal style itself and its relevance to modern training.

Common myths about animal style

In today's martial arts, there are many misunderstandings about animal styles, some of which should be resolved before we continue.

One of the common myths: animal style is just for performance and has no real function.

When you see most of the animal stylists today, it's not hard to believe this. Animal styles are developed to emphasize groups of similar concepts and to imitate behaviors that seek to achieve functional styles. Unfortunately, many practitioners try to be an animal and they forget why they were there from the start.

The common myth 2: animal style is related to the hand position.

Often, the depth of many practitioners stops at the formation of the hand position. I heard that the coach told the students that the style of the tiger is the tiger's claw, and the Crane style is the hand. If you believe then I think it has become a reality, but according to my experience, this is not the case. There are many animal styles that do not contain any signature hand techniques at all. There is a complete Tiger Boxing system that does not use claws at all, and crane styles that are almost never used are common, but are often overlooked because they don't look so important.

The common myth 3: The animal style was created by Bodhi Dharma at Shaolin Temple.

This is completely rubbish, and unfortunately the Shaolin Temple seems to be spreading around. If you see any traveler performing or watching any Shaolin documentary produced in the past few years, you will see this myth being strongly promoted. The modern animal style that comes out of the temple is not classical. They are full of acrobatics, generally running around, pretending to be animals, but with little practical function [except marketing].

The evolution of martial arts, the current Shaolin animal style is effective in the context, but in order to prepare all the martial arts we saw in Shaolin today are developed, it is ridiculous. If nothing else, Bodhidharma [Bodhi Dharma] has existed for more than a thousand years before the establishment of the first Shaolin animal form. This myth has ruined countless masters who have made outstanding contributions to Shaolin Kungfu in the history of the Shaolin era for more than 1,500 years.

So what is the style of the animal?

The animal style is more correctly called the imitation style [Xing Quan], which is a unique feature of Chinese classical martial arts. By exploring different ideas, the masters develop these styles into a way to explore the essence of human consciousness. Animals represent. Animals are a prototype that practitioners can explore to understand the variability of human thinking.

The purpose of imitation is to free ourselves from our everyday identity and to explore ways of thinking that we would not normally consider. This creates a paradigm shift and expands our understanding and competitors accordingly. The first imitation system was not a military system at all, but was developed for health prevention.

Developed by Hua Tuo, the five-line play [five animal play] uses the mimicry of tigers, bears, deer, baboons and birds to regulate and balance the body's natural health system. These exercises are very popular in terms of health, but they do not directly stimulate the development of animal imitation systems.

In 1600, Shaolin Master Bai Yufeng began to revitalize the Shaolin system. He traveled all over China for three years, met with the masters and studied various styles. Three years later, he returned to Shaolin and built a new style based on the five systems he encountered during his travels. This ' new ' style is Shaolin Wudouquan - Shaolin Wuxing Boxing.

Shaolin five animals

Shaolin Wuxing Boxing contains five different imitations - tigers, cranes, snakes, leopards and dragons. Each of these styles exists before this form, but Bai Yufeng combines them into one style, each of which praises another style. There have been records of animal boxing for centuries before Baiyufeng, but it is a decentralized example, and no one captures the imagination like this style.

Each of these animals will be discussed in detail in a later article, but I would like to mention another version of Bai Yufeng Boxing - Five Stars and Eight Fist.

"Five Stars and Eight Laws" refers to the "Five Beasts and Eight Laws", which is a summary form of Bai Yufeng's original style. In different aspects of the five-star eight-spring system, it helps to cultivate practitioners and thus improve all their efforts. In this form, tiger exercise can develop muscle strength and help increase bone density. The crane develops Jing [expressed as Qi], while the snake develops the smooth control of Qi itself. The leopard develops speed and strength, and the dragon develops the ability to remain still. All of this is possible because of the proper application of Bafa or Eight Laws.

The eight laws are:

Use internal skills correctly
from

  Proper use of external skills
from

  Applying the mind correctly
from

Mastering the development of six harmony
from

Develop six harmony through the legs and footwork
from

Correct application of the three areas of the body
from

Correct application of Chin Na function
from

  Develop Qigong correctly.
from

Although some historians believe that the style of Bai Yufeng was originally called the five-star eight-fist, the most commonly used version of Shaolin today is only a variant of the abstract form.

After Bai Yufeng

After Bai Yufeng, the imitation style became very popular, and many different imitations began to appear. In addition to tigers, cranes, leopards, dragons and snakes, there are many other animals, including many other animals, including donkeys, hawks, monkeys, drunkards, white storks, dogs, phoenixes, elephants, lions, swallows, hawks, cocks, Ducks, fish, turtles, toads, scorpions, etc. Some animals have become so popular that they have developed into unique systems, and many other animals have survived only some techniques like vultures.

With the spread of the concept of imitation practice, the entire movement system and weapon styles such as Monkey Pole and Drunken Sword began to emerge. Through the movie, they are still very popular today.
from

The imitation style is very popular in Shanmen Shaolin Boxing, and there are many imitation programs in the course. The students began to learn five-star eight-fitures at level 6 [purple belt].
