Ten tips for feeling happier now

Don't wait to change the quality of your life. Eight of the ten happiness methods can be completed in less than five minutes.

1. Smile. Lift your mouth. Soon your smile will become real. The smile that begins with hard work and pretend becomes very real, and gives time to become a habit of happiness. In the words of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, "Sometimes your happiness is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be a source of happiness."

2. Take a deep breath and breathe slowly. Focus your attention on every breath and exhalation. Imagine, in each breath, inhaling new clean energy through the top of the head and draining old stale energy out of the soles of the feet each time it is exhaled.

3. Walk quietly. Focus on every step and breath. With wandering thoughts coming into your mind, thank everyone and quickly release your thoughts and refocus on your breathing and pace.

Count your blessings. Make a list of thanksgiving. You have thousands of reasons to be grateful. Thank you for your service. List the people you depend on. Everyone has a lot of people to help along the way. Don't forget those who grow and provide food, keep electricity and phone running, provide emergency medical care, and protect the safety of the community and the nation.

Please forgive someone now. Release resentment and anger. This approach makes you happier. Telling another person you forgive them is completely optional, just a bonus.

6. Stretch your body. Do yoga, do qigong, or just stand and stretch. As a simple stretch, stand and hold your arm to form a cross. Gently bend each hand back to the wrist until the finger points straight up. Twist each hand and arm as you would a screwdriver.

7. Turn on happy music and dance. Don't stop until you are tired. Dance with someone or dance alone. Choose music that you want to move and keep moving, such as Latin Fitness Dance.

8. Spend some time with a furry friend. If you don't have your own, borrow a cat or dog today to love.

9. Service. Find someone who is more troubled than you, and do something good for them today.

10. Have a conversation with God [or anyone you call higher power]. Conversation with gratitude rather than the need.
