Home Gym - How to make your own family martial arts dojo

One of the questions I am often asked is how to make my own martial arts dojo at home. This is usually a question for students who take part in our martial arts long distance home study program. So here's a simple checklist to create the best home dojo at a cost that you can afford - just buy what you need to focus on development or what you might need.

location from

First of all, you need a place to train. Since this is about making a home dojo, we will assume that you have some space. I have used garages, backyards, rooms in the house and a combination of the three. As the backyard will be closer to creating a mini ninja camp. Let us focus on using indoor venues. The bigger the better. If you can get a garage - great!

floor from

The first and most important part of your home dojo will be the floor you train. Since most garages are cement, you need to find something you can train without the risk of injury. I recommend that you get an interlocking martial arts puzzle mat or the so-called puzzle mat. These mats have squares so you can only buy what you need. They can be placed on the floor in a matter of minutes, connecting them together like a puzzle. If you want to make room for other things, these mats are easy to pick up.

mirror

If you can't put a full wall, try using at least a full length mirror. Mirrors are a great way to train and develop skills. This is one of the quickest ways to turn yourself into a self-taught warrior.

Punching bag from

I recommend two types of sandbags. The first is a separate bag that can be moved. Things like Century's Body Opponent Bag will be perfect. You will use it to fine tune your strikes and kicks. Next you want a heavy bag. Things that are longer than your body are very tough - just like a good Thai boxing bag. Century also sells one of them.

Weapon wall from

Visit a hardware store like Home Depot and get some Peg Boards and Hooks. These are very easy to set on the wall and can be used to store/display your weapons and training equipment. This will give your family Dojo more martial arts atmosphere and feel.

Everything you get should be personal and based on your own personal needs. I will add a climbing wall, kettlebell, stereo and stretching equipment. I also like to have a whiteboard to set goals or think. Your family dojo can also be a psychological gym.
