When I first came to Japan, I was confused by the use of the word "sincerity" by some people. They seem to use it to express something completely different from what I have always understood. For me, a sincere person is a person's words and deeds that reflect the deepest feelings and beliefs of their better nature - I certainly never thought that a sincere person would become a violent person. But in Japan, I heard sincere words applied to people like the 47 ronin; 47 "armorless warriors" killed and cut off the head of a behind-the-scenes official in the name of Kira in retaliation against their lords. Insult.
Their masters lost their temper, pulled out their swords, and attacked the men in the Edo Shogunate City. For this reason, he was ordered to commit seppuku. His heirs lost all rights to his ancestral lands, and his warrior retainers suddenly found themselves unemployed. In fact, after the deadly revenge of the man attacked by their lord, Kira, his 47 former retainers showed their "sincerity." For these, they are seen as a model of Bushido and the spirit of sincerity.
As my Japanese became better, I gradually realized that the strange use of the word sincerity was a translation problem. When people tell me that 47 ronos have "sincerity" they mean they have "makoto". Kenkyusha's New Japanese-English Dictionary defines makoto in this way: "sincerity; true [single] soul; loyalty; honesty; loyalty; perseverance; dedication."
But makoto is a difficult word to translate because it brings a lot of baggage. Standard translation, "sincerity" lacks the military connotation as part of "makoto". For the samurai, it has a near-mysterious feeling that during the Second World War, the concept of makoto was used for evil. It was one of these concepts that prompted infantry and Kamikaze pilots to commit some deaths in the misguided "Japanese spirit" demonstration.
After the Second World War, the concept of makoto fell out of favor. For example, some revisionist samurai films were made in the 1960s, the most famous example being Masaki Kobayshi's 1962 movie. from

However, in the 1970s, the revival of nationalism - this time in the form of economic nationalism - and Japan to a certain extent is a unique and unique country with a unique climate, culture and sensibility. Specifically, Makoto saw that its restoration was largely due to a book written by British Japanese scientist and translator Ivan Morris. from

Part of the reason was in response to the bizarre death of the famous novelist Yukio Mishima - who committed suicide because of committing seppuku - and devoted himself to his memory. The Japanese poet Ryusei Hasegawa pointed out in his comments on the book:
... This book has changed my outlook on life. In the years after the war, I always felt that the word was a bit embarrassing and dangerous. from

I am not sure what Mr. Hasegawa said in the last sentence, but this is not an uncommon emotion in preservatives, especially those who agree with Japan's inherent uniqueness and superiority theory. In his introduction to the 2005 best-selling book "The Dignity of the Country," Fujiwara Masahiro wrote that he claimed that the Japanese had a sacred mission to save the world by teaching the principles of Bushido to all human beings. "We must become &# again 39; Japan is proud, Japan is different. ' As a model of the rest of the world, I believe that Japan can contribute to the entire human race."
Professor Saito Kazuaki gave an interesting makoto definition in an article in 1987. from
Hero and Hero Worship - Ivan Morris ' Japanese fascination with failure from
[Chinese characters with makoto are written in calligraphy on the title page]:
All these heroes, as well as the Kamikaze warriors treated in the last chapter of Morris. The book, by the way, no longer needs to be marked as ' crazy ' or ' mental disorder & thanks Morris, have a common makoto spirit, which brings their failed life Pain. It is the main quality of Japanese heroes, the purity of thought and motivation, and the rejection of selfish goals. It despises a pragmatic way of thinking and acting. This is morally picky. The rationality of a business itself, not its subjective correctness, is not important. The most important thing is the honesty supported by the hero... The Japanese respect for makoto tends to pretend to be ready to accept the last disaster in the mind of Napoleon or any other hero. Makoto is an ethical religious concept
The historical figure living in this ideal is Saigo Takamori, the real "last samurai" and one of the most popular heroes in Japan. He died in the fight against the recently established modern Meiji government, a government he established ten years ago. He is trying to preserve the samurai as a class, but is conquered by the modern conscription of a powerful soldier. In their final confrontation, he refused to surrender, even though his number exceeded 60 to 1. He and his each died with gunshots and satisfied his last suicide.
However, no one in Japanese history is closely related to "makoto" like a newborn. The new selection is a group of samurai swordsmen. Their job is to patrol the streets of Kyoto and find and kill many rogues who oppose the shogunate. They advocate the return of the emperor to the real power status by representing the shogun general. The turbulent years of the shogunate - from 1863 to 1868. They have a very strict interpretation of Bushido, and they are ruthless when facing the enemy. Their banners and uniforms are printed with Chinese characters of makoto.
"Makoto" can actually be written in three different Chinese characters or ideograms. The Chinese characters used in the new selection are composed of two parts, each of which is a complete ideogram. For its part, the left side of the character means "talking" and the right side means "being". So visually, this Chinese character means the opposite of "empty words"; it is an excellent hieroglyph of "sincere". As many loyal loyalists, Luo Ning, learned at the last minute, the new selection team is very sincere about their mission.
