Body as canvas: body art

The human body is a tool for people to experience life and the surrounding environment and to interact and communicate with others. However, for some people, the body is another canvas through which you can express yourself, their beliefs and traditions.

Draw a picture and tell a message

Just as paintings hanging on the wall make the room more beautiful, body art can enhance people's good physical fitness. Some women have a sunflower tattoo on their back so they can wear an open-back dress that reveals flawless skin with tattooed flowers. In this sense, body art is worn in the form of a diamond necklace - it is designed to decorate and enhance the wearer's beauty. However, there are other more complex reasons for the proliferation and practice of body art. These reasons may be cultural, political or spiritual.

Body art is very common in prisons. Tattoos and brands are the most common rituals for prisoners who wish to be part of certain groups. Body art can also be used to declare personal beliefs and political positions. In this case, body art can be compared to graffiti on the wall; it claims what the person wearing the art believes. Tattoos are also widely used as a form of decoration in people in ethnic groups. In some cases, tattoos are used to mark how many people the warrior killed in combat.

Body art type

The well-known body art types are body painting, tattooing, shaping, scratching, branding and body piercing. Body painting is usually done by applying on the body, usually covering the entire body with water-soluble makeup or paint. Body painting is very similar to painting on canvas, but it may be more difficult to complete because the contours of the body make the painting pictures and scenes on the body more complicated.

Tattoos, which are well known, are permanent decorations applied to the body by using electric needles. Body tattoos usually cover a relatively small part of the body. The favorite places for body tattoos are the chest, upper arms and shoulders. Body tattoos are also permanently durable because pictures or letters are etched on the skin.

Perforation is done by using materials such as beads, gems and metals. Ear piercing may be the most common way of piercing for women and some men. Today, puncture is performed on almost all parts of the body, such as the nose, lips, tongue, eyebrows, navel, nipples, etc. On the other hand, shaping is to permanently shape the body according to people's preferences. This body art approach is foot binding - very common among Chinese women.

Scars are more unconventional methods of body art. Some religious groups use the prescribed patterns to actually damage their bodies [usually sharp objects like knives]. Similar to scratches, the brand is another body art that involves a lot of pain. This was originally done for farm animals [bovine and horse] and was originally used for identification purposes. This is done by placing a piece of extremely hot metal sheet with a specific design on the body until it burns the skin and leaves traces that may last forever.

No matter what form of body art is used, it will inevitably cause different reactions. Body art can be beautiful, fascinating or disturbing, depending on the holder's views and values.
