A beginner's guide to business card terminology

Acetate - Acetate is a plastic film with many applications. You can stamp it with a rubber stamp, use it to make a vibrating card, and use it to make the image or decoration look hanging independently. You can also apply acetate with glass and glitter.

Acid-free - Any acid-free product is ideal for card making and scrapping because it does not deteriorate or discolor. Acid-free is an acid-free product.

Adhesive - An adhesive is something used to attach one material to another. Commonly used process adhesives include glue dots, glue sticks, double-sided tape and photo stickers.

Bone Folder - The Bone folder is used to score and collapse paper and cards. It is a flat piece of plastic or bone with one end pointing to the other end rounded.

Brads - Brads come in a variety of designs, shapes and colors to choose from. Brad has two forks at the back that are pushed into the paper or card and then flattened to hold in place in much the same way as the split pin.

Brayer - Brayer is often used to create a background or flip two sheets of paper to help bond them together. The brayer is a soft, rubber-made roller.

Card Stock - Card stock is a sturdy, thick scrapbook paper with many different thicknesses, weights and colors to choose from.

Cello bag - The cello bag is used to protect your card and is often used when making cards. They are made of transparent thin plastic.

Transparent rubber stamps - Transparent rubber stamps are often used with acrylic blocks, which can be positioned to your liking and blended with other stamps you add to the acrylic block.

Corner punching - Corner punching is used to cut corner shapes and is often used to trim corners of cards.

Craft Knives - Craft Knives are a must-have for business cards and scrapbooks. It is a very sharp knife with a replaceable blade.

Cutting Pad - The cutting mat is used with the craft knife. It is a mat that protects the surface you are using.

Decoupage - Decoupage is a technique for decorating cards. This is a technique for building 3D images using multiple images as layers.

Die cutting - This term means "cut out shape". The shape is usually cut from a metal form called a "mold".

Painful - Painful is a way to bring an old look to your project. This can be done in a variety of ways, including stamping, crimping, inking and tearing.

Double-Sided Tape - Double-sided tape is very sticky on both sides and can be flat or 3D.

Embellishment - Embellished to decorate a hand-made card or scrapbook page layout.

Embossing - A technique used to create raised images when stamping.

Embossed Powder - The embossed powder is a fine powder that is available in a variety of colors. The embossed powder is sprayed onto the embossed image and heated to create a raised stamp.

Eyelet - The eyelet is a metal fastener with a hole in the middle. They are attached to the card and scrapbook pages. Once attached tape and fibers can pass through the holes.

Gel Pens - Gel pens come in many different colors and can be used to color small areas with precise colors.

Glitter Glue - Glitter Glue is a pre-mixed glue with a very fine flash. Glitter glue is usually white and dry and transparent.

Glue points - Glue points are used for additional decorations such as buttons or other heavy objects. They are very sticky and should not be removed once applied.

Iris Folding - A technique for folding and overlapping strips to create a background in the aperture card.

Lightbox - Backlight box for use with embossing templates. The light in the box is transmitted through the image for viewing through the card and paper.

Extinction - Matting is also known as mat and layering. This is a technique in which a layer of paper is constructed to create a frame around the image or decoration.

Pigment Ink - Pigment inks are often used for embossing because they dry slowly like water-based inks, allowing the embossed powder to stick to it.

Rub Ons - Rub ons is a transfer that is applied by rubbing with a stick. Once applied, they are permanent. They are commonly used for scrapbook page layout and card making ideas.

Rating - A method of creating a line that can be used to fold a card.
